State transportation department ramps up winter snow and ice preparations
WSDOT is actively preparing for winter weather by training nearly 1,500 maintenance workers and inspecting over 500 snowplows statewide, ensuring readiness for snow and ice season. Travelers are advised to follow winter driving tips, which include utilizing approved traction tires and being mindful of potential mountain pass closures due to storms. Poor driving behaviors are the leading cause of pass closures, prompting WSDOT to call on drivers to remain vigilant. Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin emphasized the necessity of community cooperation in keeping highways open. Drivers should prepare their vehicles and consider adjusting travel plans during severe weather.
WSDOT offers numerous resources, such as an online winter driving guide and a mobile app, to provide current road conditions. Studded tires are permitted from November 1 to March 31, but they do not replace the need for chains when required. WSDOT estimates that studded tires cause significant damage to state roadways, prompting recommendations for alternative traction solutions.
