Marina breakwater cleaning Oct. 14 at Port of Edmonds

Edmonds, WALocal News

On October 14, the Port of Edmonds and South County Fire will clean the marina breakwater to remove bird droppings that have generated persistent odors. Marine 16, the fire/rescue boat stationed at the marina, will apply water directly from the bay during the operation. This initiative not only addresses sanitation but also acts as a training exercise for firefighters, who will practice using water streams from a moving vessel. The Port of Edmonds coordinated with the USDA to prevent any adverse effects on local wildlife, scheduling the cleanup outside of shorebird nesting season. A USDA representative inspected the breakwater prior to the cleaning to ensure compliance with wildlife protection measures.

The marina will remain open during the cleaning, with boaters urged to exercise extra caution around the operation area. This effort reflects the Port's commitment to maintaining a clean and safe waterfront for the community. Proper management of marina environments is essential for both public health and local ecology.
