Speakers explore pros and cons of levy lid lift during Monday event

Edmonds, WALocal News

Nearly 200 people gathered at the Edmonds Waterfront Center to discuss Proposition 1, a $14. 5 million levy lid lift designed to help the city overcome its budget crisis. Advocates for the measure included Treasure Mackley, who emphasized community engagement, while former City Councilmember Diane Buckshnis argued against it, framing herself as a “myth buster. ” The forum, co-hosted by My Edmonds News and the Edmonds Civic Roundtable, sought to encourage respectful dialogue about the levy. ECR board member Matt Cox highlighted the significance of the upcoming election and the need for voters to be well-informed.

Moderator Teresa Wippel detailed the fiscal emergency declared by the City Council and the external pressures influencing this decision, such as inflation and COVID. The forum's structure aimed to provide clarity on the financial implications of the proposed measure. Both speakers presented their views, contributing to a comprehensive discussion on the community's path to financial stability. Voters are encouraged to consider these perspectives ahead of the November 4 vote.
