Community Transit says its expanding bus safety and security measures

Edmonds, WALocal News

Community Transit will enforce updated Rules of Conduct on November 1 to enhance safety for bus riders and employees. The agency's board approved the revisions, which include clearer guidelines on enforcement and support for social workers assisting clients facing exclusions. Changes involve improved documentation practices for enforcement actions and a revised Exclusion Matrix, ensuring consistent and proportional responses. The new rules also apply to the popular Zip Shuttle services operating in several cities. In response to safety concerns during the pandemic, Community Transit adopted these rules in 2022 and launched a Transit Security Officer program in 2023.

The agency aims to have 35 officers by the end of 2025 to reduce incidents requiring police intervention. A newly established Security Operations Center will operate seven days a week to enhance security presence. CEO Ric Ilgenfritz highlighted the agency's commitment to safety and adherence to state and federal laws.
