Wildfire smoke alert issued Wednesday for Puget Sound region

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issued a wildfire smoke alert for the region, warning that increasing air pollution poses significant health risks to sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing conditions. The Labor Mountain and Lower Sugarloaf Fires have expanded, with Labor Mountain now at 11,679 acres and 7% containment, while Lower Sugarloaf has reached 28,387 acres and 22% containment. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and consider relocating to public spaces with air conditioning or air filters. The agency expects westerly winds to potentially improve air quality by Wednesday evening. Health risks from wildfire smoke include symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, and headaches.

Precautions include staying indoors, using air conditioners, and employing portable air cleaners. Schools and day care centers are encouraged to postpone outdoor activities due to the hazardous conditions. Individuals should consult healthcare providers for advice on mask usage and to monitor their health closely during this period.
