Reader view If we truly want to support our seniors, we should vote yes on Proposition 1

Edmonds, WALocal News

Edmonds voters must decide on Proposition 1, which funds essential human services for a community with over 22% seniors. The city’s two-person human services team addresses needs like affordable housing, mental health support, and crisis intervention for various vulnerable groups. Critics claim the levy might burden seniors on fixed incomes, but Snohomish County offers substantial property tax exemptions that protect eligible households. Currently, over 1,000 Edmonds households benefit from these exemptions. If voters reject the proposition, the city risks losing vital staff and services that support seniors and others in crisis.

Proponents emphasize that a compassionate city prioritizes care for its elderly population. Alicia Koné, president of Koné Consulting, endorses the measure, arguing it is worth the cost for median homeowners. The outcome of this vote will determine the future of human services in Edmonds.
