WA governor wants to boost states low rate of federal student aid applications

Edmonds, WALocal News

Gov. Bob Ferguson announced the Washington Completes FAFSA Campaign to address low federal student aid application rates among high school seniors. In 2025, Washington ranked 47th nationwide, with only 45. 3% of graduating students completing the FAFSA. The campaign seeks to establish an advisory board tasked with setting annual FAFSA completion goals, beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.

This board will consist of students, high school staff, and representatives from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, among others. The Washington Student Achievement Council will lead the initiative, providing resources and training for schools and community partners. The campaign will also use an AI-assisted chatbot, Otterbot, to assist families in completing applications. Tracking FAFSA completion data will help identify barriers for low-income students seeking financial aid. Completing the FAFSA is crucial for unlocking educational opportunities and accessing federal and state financial assistance.
