Edmonds American Legion Post 66 offers bin for retiring used flags

Edmonds, WALocal News

Edmonds American Legion Post 66 has initiated a recycling program for used American flags, placing a dedicated bin in front of the Old Edmonds Opera House. The bin, created by Boy Scout Troop 304 member Leo Nakamura as part of his Eagle Project, addresses frequent community requests for proper flag disposal. Residents can drop off their flags at this location, where the Post will conduct respectful retirement ceremonies. Commander Dan Mullene emphasized the importance of this initiative, thanking Nakamura for his thoughtful gift. Since May, both the American Legion and VFW Post 8870 have been meeting at the Masonic Center, fostering collaboration between the two organizations.

The program not only serves the community's needs but also reinforces the values associated with the American flag. Proper flag disposal is essential for honoring its symbolism and the sacrifices made for the country. This initiative highlights the role of local organizations in preserving traditions and promoting civic responsibility.
