In Days Gone By Dr. J.D. Sherrick and 411 Main Street Addendum

Edmonds, WALocal News

A recently discovered photo from November/December 1959 depicts a “5 & 10” store operating at 411 Main St. , constructed by Dr. J. D. Sherrick in 1909.

This revelation follows the publication of an article that highlighted the building's history and the businesses that occupied it after Sherrick's death. The article emphasized the difficulty in identifying additional past tenants due to insufficient records and photographs. In the late 1950s, Edmonds experimented with a pedestrian-only shopping mall concept on Main Street, which extended from 5th Ave to 3rd Avenue. Business owners voted against the proposal, reflecting the community's resistance to significant changes in the shopping landscape. The newly uncovered photo enriches the narrative surrounding the building and its role in Edmonds' commercial history.

It showcases a time when local businesses were adapting to changing consumer habits. This discovery underscores the importance of preserving local history and the stories tied to community spaces.
