Retired firefighter Dave "Bronco" Erickson opened the ceremony, recounting the tragic events of that day, where nearly 3,000 lives were lost, including 343 firefighters. The memorial park features a steel beam from the World Trade Center, symbolizing the impact of the attacks on the nation. Mayor Mike Rosen stressed the unexpected nature of the tragedy, noting that none of the victims anticipated the events that would unfold. Erickson expressed gratitude for the support he received from local firefighters after returning to the workforce in 2011.

The ceremony also highlighted the ongoing heroism of first responders, who put themselves in harm's way for others. The memorial includes glass panes representing each victim, serving as a poignant reminder of the lives lost. This annual gathering reinforces the community's commitment to remembering the sacrifices made on that fateful day.
