Historic milestone First powered light rail vehicle crosses I-90 floating bridge

Edmonds, WALocal News

On Monday night, a Link light rail vehicle crossed the I-90 floating bridge under its own power, marking a historic achievement for Sound Transit and the transit industry. This is the first instance globally of powered trains operating across a floating bridge, signaling a major milestone in the development of the 2 Line, set to open in early 2026. The vehicle tested speeds from 5 mph up to its full operational speed of 55 mph, with crews documenting expected electrical arcing typical of this testing phase. The system integration testing program will continue over the next few months as more tests are conducted between Mercer Island and Judkins Park stations. These tests are vital for ensuring the safety and functionality of the light rail system.

Sound Transit emphasizes the importance of this development in expanding transportation options in the region. The successful crossing not only showcases engineering innovation but also highlights the commitment to enhancing public transit infrastructure. More information regarding the Crosslake Connection is available on Sound Transit's website.
