New WA initiatives seek to undo rewrite of parental rights law, block trans girls in sports

Edmonds, WALocal News

Let’s Go Washington has announced plans to gather signatures for two new initiatives focused on parental rights and transgender participation in sports. One initiative aims to repeal House Bill 1296, which altered prior parental rights and restricted access to student medical records. The group must collect 308,911 signatures by January 2, 2026, to bring these proposals to the state Legislature, with a recommended goal of 386,000 signatures to account for potential invalidations. State Rep. Monica Stonier, a Democrat, criticized the initiatives, asserting they ignore factual discussions about education policy.

The second initiative seeks to block transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports, aligning with national debates on gender and sports. The Trump administration has taken interest in this issue, leading to federal investigations into state policies. Let’s Go Washington’s initiatives reflect ongoing tensions regarding parental rights and gender inclusivity in education. The outcome of these initiatives could significantly impact state education policies and community dynamics.
