Vegetable garden beds installed for Edmonds Boys Girls Club
The Snohomish Conservation District (SCD) and Verdant Health Commission collaborated to create vegetable garden beds at the Edmonds Boys & Girls Club, enhancing local access to fresh produce and edible gardening. The Harvest at Home program aims to educate children about growing their own food, with materials provided by SCD for three raised beds and an herb garden. These structures, located on land donated by the Edmonds United Methodist Church, will serve as an outdoor classroom for the kids. Club director Ken Cooper reported that children previously engaged in planting vegetables, donating 10% of their harvest to the Edmonds Food Bank. This initiative aligns with the club’s Healthy Habits program, emphasizing the benefits of nutrition and active living.
Director Ken Salem highlighted the project’s potential to instill lifelong healthy habits in children. As the beds remain empty for the winter, kids will research suitable plants and learn to grow seeds indoors. The project reflects a broader commitment to improving community health through gardening and nutrition education.
