Truck drivers can rest easier with new technology that finds parking along I-5
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) launched the Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS) to help truck drivers find safe parking along the Interstate 5 corridor. The system provides real-time and predictive information about available parking spaces, enabling drivers to plan their stops up to four hours in advance. Nationwide, truck drivers struggle with a severe parking shortage, with only one parking space for every 11 trucks, and 75% of Washington drivers report weekly difficulties in finding safe parking. WSDOT partnered with the University of Washington Star Lab and vendors Drivewyze and ParkerTruck to implement this groundbreaking technology. Currently, TPIMS is operational at nine locations, including Gee Creek and Maytown rest areas, with plans to expand through 2026.
Funding comes from the Freight Motor Carrier Safety Administration and federal INFRA grants, emphasizing its importance in improving highway safety. Truck drivers are encouraged to provide feedback via an online survey, allowing WSDOT to refine the program. The availability of parking information will enhance the efficiency of truck operations and potentially reduce safety risks on the road.
