The U. S. Fire Administration indicates that adults aged 65 and older face a fire fatality risk 2. 6 times greater than younger populations. In Washington state, those over 60 comprised 44.

5% of reported fire fatalities last year. To mitigate these risks, the State Fire Marshal’s Office has outlined essential fire safety tips for older adults. Recommendations include installing smoke alarms throughout the home and using specialized alarms for those with hearing or visual impairments. Creating a fire escape plan and ensuring it is practiced regularly is crucial, along with keeping exit pathways clear of obstacles. The office also emphasizes the importance of keeping mobility aids close by and cooking safety tips, such as staying in the kitchen and using timers.
