Council OKs neighborhood centers and hubs ordinance, public safety sales tax

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Edmonds City Council approved a permanent ordinance for neighborhood centers and a 0. 10% public safety sales tax during its recent meeting. The Council also directed the city attorney to prepare an ordinance that would increase business licenses by 49. 5% in 2026. Public comments from residents revealed significant opposition to the proposed tax increases, with local business owner Erik Nelson arguing that Edmonds would have the highest sales tax in Washington if both proposed increases are enacted.

Ann Christiansen criticized the messaging around a $14. 5 million levy lid lift campaign, arguing it misrepresents costs to voters. The meeting included a presentation from the Washington State Auditor’s Office regarding upcoming audits of the city’s finances. Councilmembers noted the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability as they navigate budget issues. The Council is set to reconvene on September 9 after a summer break.

These discussions reflect the community's concerns about the financial direction of the city amid proposed spending increases.
