Seattle DoorDash charges continue for Edmonds man

Edmonds, WALocal News

John Rumpelein from Edmonds has been charged a $4. 99 Seattle fee for DoorDash deliveries from Shoreline restaurants, despite the absence of such a fee in his area. This charge is linked to a Seattle ordinance requiring delivery services to pay drivers the Seattle minimum wage. Rumpelein, frustrated by the repeated charges, sought assistance from My Neighborhood News Network (MNNN) after failing to resolve the issue directly with DoorDash. Following the publication of the story, a Shoreline merchant reported no knowledge of the fee on his orders and confirmed it was not present in his merchant portal.

The fee arises because Shoreline shares ZIP codes with Seattle, leading DoorDash to mistakenly apply the charge. MNNN has provided DoorDash with information from Avalara, a tax software company, indicating that the delivery service could resolve the issue with better geographic accuracy. Rumpelein intends to switch to GrubHub for future orders and is actively working to inform local Shoreline restaurants about the fee he faces. The ongoing situation underscores a unique regulatory challenge stemming from overlapping ZIP code jurisdictions.
