City of Edmonds resumes payments for fire and emergency medical services
The City of Edmonds has resumed payments to South County Fire for fire protection and emergency medical services through 2025, after initially pausing them due to annexation into the Regional Fire Authority. The city had interpreted contract language to suggest there was no obligation to pay post-annexation, but a legal review led to a reversal of this stance. City Attorney Jeff Taraday confirmed the city's obligation to continue payments in a letter to the RFA. On July 23, the city issued a payment of $1,707,430. 84 for June and July services.
South County Fire acknowledged receipt of the payment and expects the city to honor its commitments through the end of 2025. Starting January 2026, the RFA will begin collecting fees directly from homeowners' property taxes, streamlining funding for emergency services. This resolution highlights the critical nature of funding for local fire and emergency services. The ongoing relationship between Edmonds and South County Fire is essential for the community’s safety and well-being.
