WA Department of Health launches tool to help residents find free naloxone
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has launched the Naloxone Finder, an online tool that enables residents to locate free naloxone, which can reverse opioid overdoses. Preliminary data from 2024 shows that over 3,100 people in Washington died from drug overdoses, with opioids involved in 79% of those cases. Naloxone, available as an injection or nasal spray, is user-friendly and requires no special training to administer. State health officer Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett highlighted the tool's significance for people who use opioids and their families. The Naloxone Finder offers information about organizations providing free naloxone, along with usage instructions.
Additionally, naloxone is obtainable without a prescription at pharmacies across the state. DOH urges individuals with health insurance to purchase naloxone due to limited free supplies. This initiative is part of DOH's broader efforts to combat the ongoing opioid crisis through public awareness and education campaigns.
