Ecology proposes rules for statewide battery recycling program
A new Washington law mandates battery manufacturers to develop recycling programs for consumer batteries, addressing the environmental and safety issues related to improper disposal. The Department of Ecology proposed regulations to support this initiative, aiming to make recycling simple and free for consumers. Peter Lyon, overseeing the Solid Waste Management program, highlighted the importance of proper battery disposal. The program will include a wide range of batteries, from button batteries to those used in power tools, but will exclude large electric vehicle batteries and built-in device batteries. Currently, battery recycling services vary significantly across Washington, often resulting in hazardous disposal practices.
The state anticipates the new program will provide consistent recycling services to residents, reducing fire risks at landfills. A 45-day public comment period is open until September 10, 2025, inviting community input through multiple channels. Ecology will consider all feedback before finalizing the regulations.
