Vehicle fire tips from the state fire marshal

Edmonds, WALocal News

Vehicle fires pose a serious threat, comprising 16% of all fire incidents in the U. S. between 2018 and 2022, with Washington reporting three fatalities in 2024. The State Fire Marshal’s Office emphasizes the importance of safe driving practices and regular vehicle maintenance to prevent fires. In the event of a fire, drivers are advised to safely pull over, turn off the engine, and evacuate all passengers.

They should then move to a safe distance of at least 100 feet from the vehicle and call 911 for assistance. Returning to the vehicle is strongly discouraged. The office encourages public awareness of these safety measures to reduce fire incidents. For further inquiries, the State Fire Marshal's Office can be contacted at 360-596-3904.
