WA hands out 2,000 Hope Cards to people with protection orders in programs first 6 months
Washington’s Hope Card program has distributed 2,000 portable protection order cards to vulnerable adults since its launch on January 1. These cards assist survivors of domestic violence and stalking by offering a convenient alternative to cumbersome court documents. Lauren Pilnick, a senior court program analyst, stated that alleviating concerns about victimization can have a profound impact on survivors' daily lives. Recent legislation expanded the program to include extreme risk protection order holders and eliminated applicant fees, making it more accessible. The law aims to streamline data entry for issuing Hope Cards, set to take effect on July 27.
Each card includes critical information about both the protected individual and the restrained person, facilitating interactions with law enforcement. Organizers report that responses to card requests average under three days, enhancing the program’s effectiveness. This initiative underscores Washington's commitment to improving the safety and well-being of its residents.
