Letter to the editor Its time to think beyond the honeybee
The City of Woodinville has taken a significant step by joining the Bee City USA initiative, which aims to support pollinators through enhanced habitats and reduced pesticide use. This initiative mirrors actions taken by Seattle, Bellingham, and other cities in Washington state. Advocates highlight the critical role of over 4,000 native bee species in pollination, essential for maintaining the region's ecosystems. William McClain from Lynnwood is calling for Edmonds, Lynnwood, and Mountlake Terrace to also become Bee Cities. The Xerces Society, which oversees the initiative, emphasizes the need for municipalities to adopt pollinator-friendly practices.
Pollinator Pathway NW is available to assist cities with habitat protection strategies. By fostering native bee populations, these cities can help sustain agricultural productivity and biodiversity. Supporting pollinators is essential for the health of the Northwest's natural ecosystems.
