Washingtons first battery ferry to enter service next week
Washington's first hybrid-electric ferry, the Wenatchee, will enter service next week after a $133 million conversion aimed at reducing fuel usage and emissions. Governor Bob Ferguson announced the ferry's debut during a demonstration in Elliott Bay, highlighting its importance for the state's ferry system. The Wenatchee will initially operate part-time on the Seattle-Bainbridge route, which has the highest ridership among Washington State Ferries. Passengers noted a quieter experience during the demonstration, showcasing the benefits of hybrid-electric propulsion. The ferry's full-time operations will commence later this month, though it will rely on diesel generators until shore charging infrastructure is developed.
The state plans to save approximately 25% on fuel costs while running in hybrid mode. Future upgrades will allow for a more sustainable operation as charging stations are built at terminals. This initiative marks a significant step in Washington's efforts toward electrification and decarbonization.
