Dueling Democrats 32nd Districts Ryu looks to unseat senator from her own party
Rep. Cindy Ryu is challenging Sen. Jesse Salomon in the 2026 election for Washington's 32nd Legislative District, which includes parts of Seattle and its suburbs. Ryu labels Salomon as “too moderate” and criticizes his lack of collaboration with other local representatives. Salomon, proud of his achievements in affordable housing and public safety, emphasizes his pragmatic approach and has not discouraged contributions to Ryu's campaign.
Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen views the upcoming primary as a distraction for the Democratic caucus and has attempted to limit Ryu's funding sources. Ryu's campaign is fueled by her dissatisfaction with Salomon's vote to raise the rent increase cap to 10% plus inflation, contradicting her support for a lower limit. Both candidates have a history of public service, having served on the Shoreline City Council before their current roles. Ryu has held her House seat since 2010, while Salomon was elected to the Senate in 2018. The 32nd District is a Democratic stronghold, with both Ryu and Salomon previously securing over 70% of the vote in their respective elections.
