WA State Parks says budget cuts wont undermine visitor access or services this summer
Washington State Parks will maintain visitor access and services this summer despite a $14. 7 million budget cut. The agency's operating budget for the 2025-27 biennium is set at $257. 6 million, down from the previous cycle. To adapt, State Parks eliminated nine vacant positions and curtailed staff travel.
Discover Pass prices will increase from $30 to $45 on October 1, reflecting a shift to funding 71% of costs through pass revenue. Sarah Fronk, a State Parks spokesperson, highlighted the importance of these funds for park maintenance and visitor services. The Legislature approved the pass price increase, marking the first adjustment since the passes were introduced 14 years ago. With the summer season approaching, State Parks anticipates a surge in visitors and is enhancing educational programs to reduce the need for staff assistance. The agency partnered with the Washington State Parks Foundation and Fridie Outdoors to create an educational video series for park visitors.
