One year later, memory of Jayda Woods-Johnson guides a grieving community to action

Edmonds, WALocal News

Community members gathered at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park to remember 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson, a victim of a shooting at Alderwood Mall. Many wore red, symbolizing Jayda's favorite color, as they shared memories around a bonfire. The shooting occurred on July 3, 2024, when Jayda was struck by errant gunfire during an altercation involving the suspect, Samuel Gizaw, who is awaiting trial. Advocates for "Jayda's Law," proposed by her family, seek to implement stricter sentencing guidelines for juveniles involved in violent crimes, including mandatory holding periods and charging minors as adults when firearms are involved. Lynnwood officials, including Mayor Christine Frizzell, attended the memorial, expressing concern over community safety post-shooting.

Frizzell noted the need for programs that help youth express emotions without resorting to violence. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing impact of gun violence on families and communities. Support for "Jayda's Law" aims to address the root causes of youth violence and improve safety.
