New road markings at SR 104 and 5th Avenue merge enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians

Edmonds, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation has completed a significant traffic project to enhance safety at the SR 104 and 5th Avenue merge in Edmonds. New lane markings now guide eastbound motorists to merge left before the intersection, facilitating a smoother transition and reducing confusion during peak ferry unloads. Acting Public Works Director Phil Williams highlighted the previous issues caused by two lanes merging into one, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the area. The project also focused on pedestrian safety, introducing a contrasting safety box at the crosswalk and surrounding it with bollards to protect pedestrians from stray vehicles. This design allows pedestrians to navigate a single lane, improving their crossing experience.

With more than 200 cars often flooding the route during ferry unloads, these enhancements are expected to significantly alleviate congestion. The improvements reflect ongoing efforts to create safer roadways in the region. Overall, these changes are crucial for both local residents and visitors navigating this busy area.
