Des Moines, IALocal News

The Ames Community School District's decision to switch from Durham School Services to First Student will result in the layoffs of 62 bus drivers on May 31. First Student's proposal was favored for its estimated $1 million savings over Durham's current contract. Veteran bus driver Mike Miller highlighted his commitment to the Ames community, despite offers from other districts. Anna Lam from Durham confirmed that drivers meeting standards will have options to stay or transfer. The transition aims to maintain a safe and efficient transportation experience for students.

First Student has received positive feedback from other school districts in Iowa, where it operates. The school board's request for proposals was the first since 2015. The district is focused on ensuring a smooth transition and actively recruiting to fill positions.
