Grass fire burns over 100 acres south of Adel

Des Moines, IALocal News

On Sunday afternoon, a controlled burn in Dallas County, Iowa, unexpectedly ignited into a massive 100-acre grassfire, prompting an immediate response from the Adel Fire Department and neighboring agencies. Fire crews arrived shortly after 2 p. m. to find dozens of acres ablaze, necessitating the deployment of UTVs, brush trucks, and tenders to combat the fire. Thankfully, no injuries or structural damage occurred during the incident.

Adel Fire Captain Tim Morlan noted that such burns often get out of hand in spring and fall due to dry conditions and unpredictable winds. He urged residents to ensure proper fire breaks are in place, as even a brief gust can exacerbate the situation. Mowed areas are particularly effective as fire breaks in agricultural regions. The Adel Fire Department reminded residents that although the ground may seem moist, wind can dry grass quickly, increasing fire risk. This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially during high-risk seasons.
