In a bid to enhance the concert experience, the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines has unveiled two new restaurant/bars: Work In Progress and Tom Archer's Poor Man's Country Club. Following extensive renovations that began in January 2023 and were completed in 2024, the ballroom is now a bustling destination for both dining and entertainment. General Manager Sam Summers noted that the venue's transformation has been positively received by the local community, with neighbors expressing satisfaction with the sound levels during events. Chef Ryan Skinner, who has deep ties to the area, is passionate about returning to his roots and creating menus that celebrate Des Moines' rich culinary heritage. His approach reflects a commitment to honoring local history, drawing inspiration from beloved establishments like Johnny’s Vet’s Club.

Tom Archer's Poor Man's Country Club is scheduled to open on January 31, 2025, with reservations available from January 10, while Work In Progress is already operational. This initiative not only revitalizes the Val Air Ballroom but also aims to foster a vibrant community hub for dining and entertainment. The addition of these venues represents a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of the Des Moines dining landscape.
