New Scholarship Makes Recreation Programs More Affordable for Thousands of Des Moines Kids

Des Moines, IALocal News

A transformative scholarship program has been introduced by Des Moines Public Schools in collaboration with Des Moines Parks and Recreation, aiming to provide affordable recreational opportunities for local youth. Effective January 1, students who qualify for free and reduced meals can participate in various youth sports and swim lessons for a nominal fee of $5, significantly lowering the financial barrier to entry. This initiative is expected to benefit around 25,000 students, promoting active engagement in extracurricular activities before they complete fifth grade. Benjamin R. Page, the Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the importance of swimming as a life skill and the numerous advantages of participating in youth sports.

The program has received backing from the Mayor and City Council, who recognized the need to make recreational activities more accessible. Eligible participants can opt-in through the Des Moines Public Schools website at any point during the year. This effort not only enhances youth development but also fosters community involvement and physical well-being. For more information about the Youth Recreational Scholarship program, families are encouraged to visit the official Parks and Recreation website.
