City Extends COVID-19 Building Closures and Freeze on Event Permits

Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines has extended its COVID-19 building closures and the freeze on public event permits until July 1, 2020, in light of a significant surge in coronavirus cases within Polk County. Mayor Frank Cownie stressed the importance of these measures, citing the county's current total of 1,778 cases, a stark increase from just 813 cases a week prior. This extension includes popular community events that typically utilize city streets, such as the Downtown Farmers’ Market and the Des Moines Arts Festival. The closure of administration buildings will remain in effect until June 15, affecting key services including City Hall and the Civil & Human Rights Department. In addition, all deadlines for city permits, licenses, and fines are suspended indefinitely, while parking meter enforcement continues to be relaxed.

This proactive approach aims to limit gatherings and reduce the risk of further virus transmission. Mayor Cownie indicated that updates regarding parks and recreational services would be provided later in the week. Residents are urged to visit the city’s COVID-19 information page for the latest updates and guidance.
