Flashboards Installed on the Des Moines River Tuesday Morning

Des Moines, IALocal News

On July 21, 2020, the City of Des Moines will install flashboards on the Center Street Dam to enhance water levels on the Des Moines River, which is vital for recreational activities. These flashboards, measuring two feet in height and nine feet in length, will temporarily lower water levels starting the afternoon of July 20, impacting local boaters and users of Birdland Marina for 24 to 36 hours. The installation process requires adjustments to the outflow at the Saylorville Reservoir dam, enabling city staff to walk on the dam safely. After the flashboards are installed, the outflow will be recalibrated to raise the water level by approximately two feet. This initiative is part of the Parks and Recreation Department's ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance local water recreation.

Residents can contact Director Benjamin R. Page for more information regarding the installation and its effects on water levels. The Parks and Recreation Department, founded in 1892, manages a wide range of programs and facilities in Des Moines. This project reflects the city's commitment to improving recreational opportunities for its residents.
