The Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission has been awarded the 2020 Governor’s Emmy® Award for their documentary, _Breaking Bread, Building Bridges_. Directed by Joshua V. Barr, the project seeks to unite individuals from diverse backgrounds by facilitating a series of dinners designed to explore their differences and find common ground. From over 150 initial participants, 34 were selected to engage in these discussions, which occurred over five months. The documentary, produced by Digital Matters Productions, premiered online on April 30, 2020, and has received more than 17,000 views on platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

Barr highlights the pressing need for connection in an increasingly polarized society, stating that the documentary serves as an example of how to transcend differences. The award will be presented during the 21st Annual Upper Midwest Emmy® Awards video ceremony, scheduled for November 14, 2020. This recognition underscores the importance of creative initiatives that promote civil rights and community engagement.
