The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department has announced that its comprehensive plan, LiveDSM, has won two significant awards, including the Advancing Diversity and Social Change Award. Completed in 2018, LiveDSM represents a critical long-range strategy for the city's parks and recreation system, marking the first such effort in over twenty years. The plan prioritizes racial and social equity, ensuring that every community member has access to parks and recreational programs, regardless of income, ethnicity, or ability. Director Benjamin R. Page stated that the implementation of LiveDSM will unify various initiatives under a shared vision aimed at transforming lives through public spaces.

The plan addresses fundamental issues of accessibility and equity, acknowledging the systemic disparities that have historically limited access to recreational resources. LiveDSM not only seeks to improve park facilities but also aims to enhance neighborhood design and promote healthy community interactions. With a focus on environmental stewardship and community engagement, the plan is set to activate natural areas and waterways, making them more inviting for residents. Overall, LiveDSM stands as a testament to Des Moines' commitment to creating a world-class parks and recreation system that serves all citizens.
