The City of Des Moines is taking proactive steps to provide community support by delivering 649 hot Thanksgiving meals to elderly residents in apartment complexes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Announced on November 23, 2020, this initiative is particularly important as many families are choosing to forgo traditional gatherings, leaving seniors at risk of isolation. Chris Johansen, the Neighborhood Services Director, highlighted the city's commitment to ensuring those who cannot be with their families can still enjoy a festive meal. Collaborating with Hy-Vee, the city will distribute meals to ten apartment complexes, including all four public housing elderly buildings, at a total cost of $6,490. The meal deliveries are scheduled for November 24 and 25, providing timely support just before Thanksgiving.
