In response to the financial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Des Moines has announced a $300,000 grant program designed to support local restaurants. The Dine Out Des Moines Delivery Assistance program aims to reimburse restaurants for delivery and takeout supplies, with each restaurant eligible for up to $7,500 in funds. These reimbursements will cover expenses incurred starting December 1, 2020, and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning January 26, 2021. Development Services Director Erin Olson-Douglas highlighted the critical role that restaurants play in the character and economy of Des Moines, stating that this initiative is intended to stimulate business while maintaining the city's culinary diversity. The Iowa Restaurant Association has raised alarms about the potential loss of up to 60% of restaurants in Iowa due to the pandemic, underscoring the importance of timely support.
