Flashboard Removal Rescheduled Due to Weather

Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines has announced a new schedule for the removal of flashboards from the Center Street Dam, now set for March 26, 2021, due to anticipated rain on March 24. The operation will begin at 7:30 a. m. , contingent on weather conditions, and is important for maintaining safe water levels in the Des Moines River. Starting March 25, boaters at Birdland Marina and along the river should prepare for lower water levels lasting between 24 to 36 hours.

The Saylorville Reservoir dam's outflow will be modified to ensure city staff can safely walk on the Center Street Dam during the operation. Following the removal of the flashboards, the outflow will be adjusted again to raise the water level by about two feet. This proactive management of water levels reflects the city's commitment to public safety and environmental stewardship. Residents can reach out to Benjamin R. Page, Director of Parks and Recreation, for additional details.
