Sewer TV - Remote Cameras Used to Prevent Major Backups in Des Moines Sanitary Sewer System

Des Moines, IALocal News

In a significant move to bolster its infrastructure, the City of Des Moines is utilizing remote cameras to inspect its expansive sanitary sewer system, which spans roughly 1,000 miles. This initiative, initiated by the Public Works Department, aims to identify potential hazards proactively, thereby preventing costly repairs associated with sewer backups. Public Works Director Jonathan Gano stated that this massive effort will take time but is expected to yield long-term benefits. Collaborating with contractor Equix, the city plans to inspect around 100 miles of sewer lines this year, marking a substantial step forward in maintenance practices. Clean Water Program Administrator Patrick Beane emphasized the importance of transitioning from reactive to proactive measures, noting that repairs made before issues escalate are significantly less expensive.

The initiative also serves to educate residents about the critical role of the sanitary sewer system in daily life. By taking these steps, Des Moines aims to improve the safety and efficiency of its wastewater management services. This program not only reflects the city's commitment to maintaining its infrastructure but also enhances the quality of life for its over 217,000 residents.
