The City of Des Moines has announced the retirement of SmartCards as it upgrades its parking meter technology, with the final installations expected by July 2022. Residents holding SmartCards are advised to use their balances before April 1, 2022, to prevent losing any unused funds. The city will stop selling new SmartCards on August 16, 2021, and will limit the amount that can be added to existing cards to $25. 00 by September 3, 2021. As part of the transition, the new multi-space meters will operate at a rate of $1.

25 per hour, with selected meters at $0. 75 per hour. Meters in the Historic East Village will begin to be upgraded in January 2022. This change is designed to enhance the parking experience for the over 217,000 residents of Des Moines. The city encourages residents to stay informed about these changes through official channels.
