2nd Avenue Bridge Closing This Week for Bridge Deck Overlay

Des Moines, IALocal News

The 2nd Avenue and Birdland Drive bridges in Des Moines will close from April 18, 2023, for crucial final overlay work, marking a significant milestone in their rehabilitation process that began in early 2022. Serving approximately 19,000 vehicles daily, these bridges are essential for maintaining traffic flow across the city. Detour routes will be set up to minimize disruption, guiding drivers from Franklin Avenue to Arlington Avenue and 6th Avenue both south and north of the river. Contractors have reported progress ahead of schedule, but the total project cost of $10 million is still expected to conclude by fall 2023. This closure is part of a larger initiative to remedy the 18 bridges classified as "structurally deficient" in Des Moines, with 13 of them already repaired or replaced since 2011.

The city of Des Moines emphasizes its commitment to infrastructure enhancement and reliable transportation services for its residents. The rehabilitation of these historic bridges, constructed in the 1930s, reflects both the community's heritage and its future needs. As construction continues, local authorities encourage drivers to remain informed of detours and updates for safe navigation.
