Des Moines, IALocal News

The City of Des Moines is excited to announce the opening of orders for its Tiny Trees Program for 2024, which allows residents to request up to five free trees. This year's selection features eight new species, including Sweetgum and Ohio Buckeye, aimed at enhancing local landscapes and promoting sustainability. Since its launch in 2017, the Tiny Trees initiative has successfully distributed tens of thousands of trees, significantly contributing to the city's urban forest. Des Moines City Forester Shane McQuillan expressed enthusiasm for the program, noting its role in fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship. Public Works Director Jonathan Gano highlighted that the program not only beautifies neighborhoods but also helps in achieving long-term ecological benefits.

Residents have until April 28 to place their orders, with the giveaway event set for May 11 at Polk County River Place. The city encourages participation to boost its tree canopy while providing residents with the joy of planting and nurturing new trees. More information is available on the City of Des Moines' website, where residents can also volunteer for the event.
