Des Moines Residents Can Pick Up Tiny Tree Orders This Saturday

Des Moines, IALocal News

On May 11, 2024, Des Moines residents can participate in a free Tiny Trees giveaway at Polk County River Place, reinforcing the city's efforts to expand its urban forest. The event is organized by the Department of Public Works' Forestry Division and has experienced a remarkable 17% increase in tree orders this year, indicating a strong commitment to sustainability among the community. Residents can collect up to five free trees, including sought-after species such as the Eastern Redbud and American Persimmon, from 8 a. m. to noon.

Those who missed the initial ordering period will still have an opportunity to receive trees, as a limited quantity will be available for walk-ins. Furthermore, if any trees remain after the main event, a second-chance giveaway is scheduled for May 18 at City Hall. Participants are advised to keep an eye on the Public Works Facebook page for official announcements following the event. This initiative not only promotes environmental stewardship but also fosters community involvement in local sustainability efforts. The Tiny Trees program has been a staple in Des Moines since 2017, giving away thousands of seedlings each spring.
