Boaters and Residents Expect Temporary Lower Des Moines River Levels As Crews Remove Flashboards

Des Moines, IALocal News

Starting on November 21, 2024, water levels in the Des Moines River will temporarily decrease as crews from the City of Des Moines remove flashboards from the Center Street Dam. The removal process is set to begin on November 22 at 7:30 a. m. , contingent on favorable weather conditions, and will involve adjusting the outflow at Saylorville Reservoir to ensure safety for the city staff conducting the operation. Boaters and residents, especially those at Birdland Marina, should brace for lower water levels, which are expected to last for approximately 24 to 36 hours.

This action is part of a flood mitigation strategy, with flashboards being reinstalled once the outflow at Saylorville Reservoir is at 4,000 CFS or less and other criteria are met. The city emphasizes the importance of this operation in maintaining public safety and managing water resources effectively. A video showcasing the flashboards' removal process from a previous year is available for those interested in understanding the procedure better. Should inclement weather arise, the removal will be rescheduled for November 26. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official city channels for any further announcements.
