City Council Approves 33-Story 515 Walnut Project, Redefining the Downtown Skyline

Des Moines, IALocal News

The Des Moines City Council has approved the ambitious 33-story 515 Walnut project, poised to reshape the downtown skyline and meet the city's escalating housing demand. This landmark apartment tower will feature 390 residential units, contributing significantly to the approximately 1,300 new housing units planned for the area. Mayor Connie Boesen remarked on the rarity of such a large-scale project, noting its potential to bring vitality to the downtown core. Alongside residential offerings, the building will include a coffee shop, bike storage, coworking spaces, fitness facilities, and a rooftop deck with a pool, enhancing urban living. The project is also expected to create over 700 construction jobs, providing a significant economic boost to the community.

Furthermore, it will reconnect a vital segment of the downtown skywalk network, which was disrupted by the recent demolition of the Kaleidoscope Mall. Construction is set to commence in early 2025, with an anticipated completion date in 2027. This development reflects Des Moines’ ongoing commitment to fostering vibrant, sustainable urban environments.
