West Side MMA Fighter Dies After Collapsing In Ring At Cicero Event, Promoter Says
Isaac Johnson, a 31-year-old mixed martial arts fighter, died after collapsing in the ring during a heavyweight match at the Matador Fighter Challenge event in Cicero, Illinois, on Friday. He was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on Saturday. Event promoter Joe Goytia reported that the cause of death is currently unknown, and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has yet to disclose any findings. Johnson was actively involved in his community through the Westside Cultural Alliance, which hosts the 1865 Fest, an event celebrating Juneteenth and Black fatherhood. Community organizer LaCreshia Birts paid tribute to him, noting his dedication to his family and heritage.
The match, described by Goytia as a "slugfest," was Johnson's first professional fight. Both competitors wore protective gear, and nothing unusual was noted during the bout. The town of Cicero is investigating the circumstances surrounding Johnson's death.
