Former NYC Schools Chief A Finalist For Chicago Schools CEO

Chicago, ILLocal News

Meisha Ross Porter, former New York City schools chief, is a finalist for the CEO position at Chicago Public Schools, with interviews scheduled for next week. This search marks the first time Chicago's new 21-member school board will select a leader for its school district, the fourth largest in the nation. Porter, who held the NYC role for ten months, initiated significant policy changes that were later reversed by her successor, Mayor Eric Adams. After her tenure, she led the Bronx Community Foundation, which struggled with financial management and was ultimately dissolved in 2024. Chicago's board plans to finalize the selection by December 3, following the departure of interim CEO Macquline King.

The previous CEO, Pedro Martinez, was dismissed amid conflicts with Mayor Brandon Johnson over district finances. Porter has garnered respect among education leaders and is also being considered for other leadership roles. The decision is critical as Chicago Public Schools seeks stability during ongoing financial and operational challenges.
