Dear Margaret Permanently Closing In Lakeview, But Owners Are Planning A Comeback

Chicago, ILLocal News

Dear Margaret, a beloved French-Canadian restaurant in Lakeview, has closed following a fire that caused extensive damage to its 150-year-old building. The fire, ignited by an electrical outlet underneath the bar, led to significant smoke and soot damage throughout the dining area and kitchen. Owner Lacey Irby noted the emotional toll on the staff, many of whom had to be let go due to financial constraints, despite a GoFundMe raising nearly $30,000 for payroll support. Irby and Executive Chef Ryan Brosseau are determined to reopen in a new location, having already begun scouting larger spaces, as they felt they were outgrowing their original venue. The restaurant gained acclaim for its unique French-Canadian cuisine and was recognized by The New York Times as one of the best restaurants in America in 2022.

Irby aims to reassure the community that they will bounce back stronger from this setback. As they navigate the challenges of rebuilding, they plan to maintain connections through pop-up events and collaborations with other local chefs. The closure marks a significant loss for the Lakeview community, which embraced Dear Margaret since its opening in 2020.
