At his funeral, family and friends praised his intelligence, humor, and compassion, recalling how he loved to create TikTok dance videos and spend time with loved ones. Reports indicate that John was chased by two men who attempted to steal his bicycle, leading to the fatal shooting. Witnesses claimed he shot back at the assailants, but police found no evidence of a weapon on him. His mother, Selinda Bennet, emphasized that John was focused on education and had no involvement with gangs or firearms.

She expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her son, who was expected to graduate from Chicago Bulls College Prep in 2028. Currently, detectives are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made. The community continues to grieve for a young life lost too soon.
